The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and given more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.
This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the possibility of the former president's transfer to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was prevented because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the military leaders. His successor was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the time, the legal team called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
