The buzz surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a dog told you.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this legendary franchise.
