Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
