No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
