New research reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such medications need to be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
