Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.

Police report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.

Police then located numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials say early analysis show the substance was likely human blood.

"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; authorities are presently not informed of any harm in association with the event," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to solve the case" and have requested to the public for tips.

An important political figure said the incident left him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
